Photography Workshop

we had an amazing time over on vashon island at our photo workshop this spring. a few weeks prior jon and i attended a photography workshop in new orleans with keith carter . it was such a good experience to be on the other side before we taught our own workshop. during our time in new orleans we had long talks about this whole "photography thing" and what it means to each of us. we gave much thought to how we would explain our process. i planned and worried as the workshop grew closer. but the moment our group arrived i instantly felt at ease and excited! they were a wonderful and talented bunch! we did two photo sessions the day of the workshop. the first was a blustery ferry ride portrait session with the cutest couple, jen & zach . the second one was with the adorable leffel family, we shot them around the tahlequah house. we enjoyed a very special and inspiring day that lasted well into the night. our goal that day was to encourage the group to slow down and to be content with creating just one good meaningful photo from the day. in a world where it's normal for people to fire off 3,000 photos at a wedding or post 40 photos on their blog from one engagement session, we encouraged everyone to move in the other direction. if you would like to see more photos and read about the experience from our attendees' point of view, please check out the follow blog posts.....

Photo Workshop - mixed media

this spring we hosted a photography workshop on vashon island. on the second day of the workshop we focused on incorporating mixed media art with photography. we explained what supplies and tools work best for incorporating collage elements and beeswax with photographs. after a couple demonstrations, we set everyone free to experiment with their own images. it was such a fun and lively group and we made a fabulous mess together! i felt like i was crafting with a bunch of old friends, giggling away and cheering each other on. at the end of the day, each person left the island with a collection of their own mixed media pieces and some waxy fingertips :)

Tahlequah Outlook

our talented friend jeremy leffel brought his adorable family over to our photo workshop on vashon island to be our "models" for the group. we really appreciate that they took the time to join us, they were a huge hit and everyone just loved them! i am excited to share more photos that our amazing workshop attendees captured of this lovable bunch in the next couple days. our goal for this session was to move away from contrived portraiture and let the environment and subject tell the story within the image. below are my favorite portraits that i made that day. this family is so incredibly sweet, i'd like to be adopted.

 

Vashon Island

yesterday jon and i took a quick trip over to vashon island to check out the spot where we will be hosting our first photography workshop in may, the tahlequah outlook house. winter made a little comeback this week, which made for a perfectly chilly northwest winter adventure. the house is charming and cozy, we are excited about our intimate group of talented photographers who will be attending the workshop! visiting the house confirmed that it's all turning out just how i pictured in my head. i can't wait to see the island again in the spring, all in bloom! if you would like to complete our group, hop on over to our workshop blog to get all the details. we only have one spot left, so don't delay!

on our way home we made a quick stop at bargain world. it's fun taking photos in the thrift store.

this time we left empty handed. so next time we should score big.

Workshop Update

we've received a lot of sweet messages and comments on our may workshop. it's going to be so much fun! we had a couple folks ask if we could split up the workshop because they were mainly interested in photography and could only make it to the first day. then i had coffee with some non-photographer friends, and they said the exact opposite. they want to learn about the mixed media art on day two, but weren't as interested in the photography stuff on day one. so, it got me thinking......

everyone is unique with different desires, interests and needs, that's what makes life so sublime. i've never been one to fit into a box or to try to put someone into one. so, we've decided to split the workshop up into two days to allow more flexibility for our attendees. feel free to sign up for just one day, either focusing on photography (day one) or mixed media art (day two) or spend both days with us, and enjoy the whole shebang!

Photography Workshop!

so that's the big news! we've been wanting to teach a workshop for a really long time. it just took us awhile to figure out the perfect time, place and approach for us. after a lot of thinking we've got a great plan in place, we're so excited to see it finally come together! all the info you need to know about the  workshop is over here! it's will be on Vashon Island, May 3rd and 4th, amateurs and professionals welcome. we will share stories and personal experiences while providing hands on guidance. our focus will be on exploring the artistic and narrative side of image making. we both have experience as teachers and are excited about sharing our love for photography! we believe that teaching is an art in itself and embrace it completely. spots are limited in order to ensure that our workshop is intimate and that each person receives plenty of personal attention. read all about it.
