About

VASHON_TABLE_2Please join us, Heather and Jon of One Love Photo, for an artful photo adventure on May 3rd and 4th. Set within the intimate, picturesque Tahlequah Outlook house on Vashon Island. This is a wonderful opportunity to bond with other photographers while we experiment with new and old photo techniques. We will explore the use of manual film cameras, homemade lenses and mixed media artwork for wedding and portrait work. We will share stories and personal experiences while providing hands on guidance. Shooting together, as we dig into some of our favorite photographic techniques. Expect loads of laughter, fresh perspective, and to awaken your creative soul.

The workshop will take place on Vashon Island, one of our favorite local getaways. Only a 15 minute ferry ride from Tacoma or Seattle, once on the ferry boat you can't help but relax as you enjoy the views of the Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. We are splitting the workshop up into two days to allow more flexibility for our attendees. Feel free to sign up for just one day, either focusing on photography (day one) or mixed media art (day two) or spend both days with us, and enjoy the whole shebang! Spots are limited for the workshop and will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Payment in full is required to reserve a spot. Contact us via email if you would like to attend, please put "workshop" as the subject line and send your message to heather@onelovephoto.com.

DayOneThis will be our big Photography Day! We will start at the the Tahlequah Outlook with a "get to know each other" breakfast. We will look at the work of historically significant and fine art photographers, for inspiration and guidance to begin our photo adventure. Our focus will be on exploring the artistic and narrative side of image making. Taking advantage of the island setting we will visit some beautiful locations with our cameras. During the first shoot we will focus our attention on shooting with our internal light-meter, looking for subtle differences in light. You can bring your digital camera or dust off your film camera for a change of pace.

6a00e54ee53c4288340120a750c0f9970b-600wi In the afternoon we will shift gears and talk about the business of photography. Sharing our approach to marketing and getting clients that are a perfect fit for us. How to set up a successful wedding photography time line, and collaborating with clients to make better images. We will discuss the things we do which set us apart and what you can do to create your own personal spin on wedding and portrait photography.

6a00e54ee53c4288340120a60c2659970b-600wi In the evening we will shoot portraits on the grounds of the Tahlequah Outlook. The emphasis will be on simplicity and creating art by transcending the ordinary. To move away from contrived portraiture and let the environment and subject tell the story within the image. We will conclude by sharing a delicious dinner prepared by a local cook.

Day two will be our hands on Mixed Media Art Day. This part of the workshop is open to photographers, non-photographers, and artists who are interested in creating mixed media pieces with their favorite photographs. We will explain what supplies and tools work best for incorporating collage elements and beeswax with photographs. After a demonstration we will set you free to experiment with one of your own images. You will leave the island with your very own mixed media piece and waxy fingertips. We will provide each person with a wood panel, plenty of beeswax and all the necessary supplies. Learn more about our mixed media work over here and here.

We have been married for almost five years, together for fifteen and have been friends since sixth grade. In high school we both took independent art study classes at the same time. While I was hiding out in the darkroom most of my senior year, Jon was covered in clay over in the pottery studio. One of the biggest things we have done together as a couple is to merge our skills and talents to photograph weddings all over the country as "One Love Photo". We both bring something very different to the table, yet we share a similar aesthetic vision which gives our images a cohesive look. We capture weddings using a combination of cameras and techniques. In addition to using high quality digital gear, we also shoot with a medium format film camera, homemade custom lenses and even a couple plastic toy cameras. We both have experience as teachers and are excited about sharing our love for photography with you! We believe that teaching is an art in itself and embrace it completely.

A little bit more about each of us.....

HEATHER- I fell in love with photography when I was fourteen and I shot my first wedding when I was fifteen. I don't know life without a camera, it's the one and only consistent interest I have had in my life. I love shooting film, manual focus, and composing in a square. I studied commercial photography at the Art Institute. After that I did a fair amount of editorial work in my early twenties for local magazines, while pursuing my artistic endeavors on the side. In 2000 I was honored to have a book published by Chronicle Books featuring my photographs, titled "Up to No Good". In 2003 I became a full time photography teacher at Stadium High School. Teaching was an incredible experience and I walked away from it a much stronger person and artist. While I was teaching I started to shoot weddings during my summers off and quickly realized that this was what I wanted to do full time. I asked Jon if he would be my photo partner and once he joined me our wedding work really took off. In addition to wedding photography I love making portraits of children and also creating mixed media beeswax pieces with our images.

JON- Jon brings so much to our photography business. He has created his own set of homemade lenses and is always thinking of new ways to approach wedding photography. He has a keen eye for creative compositions and constantly challenges me to try new things. Before Jon started shooting weddings he was working full time making miniature pottery. We have traveled all over the country and to Europe showing Jon's pottery.  Each June we travel to Maine where Jon teaches a week long raku pottery course at the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA) school. This winter he has started working in a brand new medium and his pottery studio has been taken over with cardboard boxes, x-acto blades and glue. You can check out his incredible new artwork work on this website. And if all that talent wasn't enough he is also an AMAZING musician. Perhaps we will get lucky and he'll serenade us during dinner over on the island!
